'Not been overly excited' – Former Chelsea GK says who will become club’s number one
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

A former Chelsea stopper says he has not been overly excited by one of their current goalkeepers so far and picks who he believes will be the number one going forward.

Chelsea signed both Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic in the summer, and it has been Sanchez who has kept the number one spot under Mauricio Pochettino.

But he has since been injured and that has presented an opportunity for Petrovic to step up and play some games. He’s been very good and looks like a decent stopper and also pretty calm on the ball.

Sanchez might have to fight to get his place back, and I am sure that Petrovic has no intentions of giving it up easily now.

Former Blue Mark Schwarzer though, believes that Petrovic will be the regular Chelsea number one going forward.

Yeah, absolutely,” Schwarzer said when asked by football.london and LiveScore Bet whether Petrovic can now take Sanchez’s spot as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper. “Look, I’ve not been overly sort of excited about the way that Robert Sanchez has played.

“I think there’s been a lot of inconsistency. I think it’s tough for any goalkeeper coming into that team at the moment because of the instability. They’ve obviously had a lot of injuries along the way and obviously, Robert Sanchez is now one of those injured players.

“So it does give Petrovic an opportunity to stake a claim. The one thing against Petrovic is just a complete lack of experience right at this level. But the only way you get it is by playing games, right? And he’s forced in that position.

“Now, Pochettino’s forced to play him because of the injury of Sanchez. And yes, it is an opportunity now because if he sets the world a light in his performances for Chelsea in this period of time, it’s going to be more difficult for Pochettino to make the change again and bring Robert Sanchez back in.”

It will certainly be very interesting to see what Pochettino does when Sanchez is back to full fitness and in the squad again.
