Hornets beleaguered big man makes shocking trade request

Kai Jones has requested a trade from the Charlotte Hornets. The 22-year-old center is currently away from the team due to 'personal reasons.'

According to a statement released by the Hornets, there isn't a timetable for Jones' return.

"There is not currently a timetable for his return to the team," The Hornets statement read. "Out of respect for the personal nature of the situation, the Hornets will not have any additional public comments regarding the matter at this time."

Throughout the summer, Jones made multiple questionable choices on social media in recent months. The young big man has even taken aim at some of his teammates, including recent second-overall pick Brandon Miller.

Jones has slowly been making inroads in the NBA. Last season, the sophomore center participated in 42 regular-season games. He averaged 3.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks per game. Jones has flashed elite athleticism during his limited playing time. As such, some Hornets fans envisioned a bigger role for the Texas product in the upcoming season.

Following Jones' recent social media activity, it may be difficult for him to find a new team. Other NBA rosters will be weary of trading for a player who publicly called out his teammates. We're also just weeks away from the new season.

Most teams have their rosters locked in and won't be looking to make any alterations until closer to the trade deadline. Jones has a team option on his contract for next season. If he is traded in the coming months, that option will almost certainly be picked up.

Success has alluded Charlotte in recent years. With LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller on the roster, the franchise should be looking to build for the future.

If Jones doesn't wish to remain with the franchise, they shouldn't stand in his way. The Hornets have a chance to turn their franchise around. Jones isn't a core part of the rotation. There should be no reason to play hardball in any potential negotiations.
